Mackerel Snackies

Back | Home Page

Preheat oven to 350 deg

This treat has a strong odor while mixing and cooking because of the mackerel. Your kitties will be hanging around closely, waiting for them to come out of the oven - perhaps, trying to snatch bits from your mixer bowl! Watch those little paws! We do not want them to get caught in the beaters! .

  1. 1 can of canned mackerel*
  2. 2 cups of crushed corn flakes or cracker crumbs*
  3. 2 Tlb vegetable or olive oil
  4. 4 eggs
  5. 1 tsp Brewer's yeast*
  6. 1/2 cup soy flour
  7. cornmeal to roll it out on
  8. A floured dishtowel or other clean, white cloth - about 30" X 30" - to roll the dough on*
  9. A heavy-duty mixer

*a---Any brand. I just dump the can into the mixer bowl and let the beaters break it up.
*b---I put them into a gallon sized plastic bag and use my rolling pin to crush them.
*c---I have used regular yeast when I was out of Brewer's yeast.
*d---You can also use waxed paper. One sheet on the bottom and one sheet on top.

Use the mixer to mix the ingredients together pretty much in the order shown. I always start with the wet ingredients and add the dry a little at a time to keep the mixer from throwing everything all over the counter.

You can drop tiny bits of the mixture onto a greased corn-floured baking sheet if you want to do it that way, or you can roll it out on the floured towed to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. The thinner, the better. You may find it easier to separate it into sections before rolling. Remember that kitties like tiny bites.

I usually use a pizza cutter and cut it into 1/2" strips. Then when I take it out of the oven, I either cut or break it into bite-sized pieces. Bake on an cookie sheet for 10 to 12 minutes. You want them to be slightly brown and crisp. They puff up when cooking (remember the yeast?). I usually spread a clean cloth on the counter to cool them on, because my oven's too full.

After the snacks are cool, you should store these, (in a sealed container), in the refrigerator. I store anything I put eggs, fish, or meat in in the refrigerator. They can also be frozen til you want them.
