Brussels Griffon

Oliver is a Brussels Griffon!

The Brussels Griffon, an active breed that's always on the watch for action, originated in Belgian in the 19th century. It was probably a cross between the Affenpinscher and the Belgian "stable" dog. It's cocky, self-sure attitude made it a favorite with cab drivers.

At that time in history, the Pug was extremely popular in Holland and the Griffon was crossed with it, the Yorkie, and the English Toy Spaniel. The Pug and the Toy Spaniel contributed a great deal to the head configuration of the Brussels Griffon.

The Griffon was nearly destroyed during WWI, but enough survived because of its great demand by nobility to continue the breed. Griffon means "wiry" coat, so many of the early smooth and silky coated dogs were frowned on; now the rough coats are known as Belgian Griffons and the smooth coats as Petit Brabancons.

The bold, playful Brussels Griffon is brimming with self-confidence and proud of itself! Usually good with other pets, it's small size,(8ᆞ lbs and 9-11 inches tall), sensitive nature and entertaining disposition make it a popular pet; however, the small size can make it a less than ideal pet for households with small children.

This active, intelligent little dog needs plenty of daily mental and physical activity. The physical activity, fortunately, can be met with walks on leash or active indoor games. The rough coat will need brushing 2-3 times per week and a stripping every 3-4 months.

We are pleased to welcome Oliver to our practice!
