Norwegian Elkhound

Loki is a Norwegian Elkhound!

The Norwegian Elkhound is an ancient northern breed that was developed over 6000 years ago in Scandinavia to help with the hunt for moose, bear and wolf. It has served as a guardian, hunter, defender and herder. Archaeological excavations in Stone age caves have found evidence of this breed's domestication around 5000BC.

As you can imagine, this intelligent, alert dog is confident, capable and self-reliant. It requires leadership, supervision and vigorous exercise in a safe environment. The strong hunting and chasing instincts can lead it astray.

Most are friendly toward strangers, but a few are reserved. Some are aggressive toward other dogs and cats. Seldom biting, they can still use their natural prey instincts to be protective when necessary. Their sharp, loud bark is particularly effective.

The Elkhound can be a challenge to train because of its intelligence and dominance. The Elkhound is happiest when indulging in daily vigorous exercise outdoors in cold weather. Young Elkhounds can be very boisterous and knock things down - including small children. They have been frequently been seen in the obedience and agility rings.

The thick coat is a result of centuries of adaptation to subzero temperatures and deep snow. The outer coat sheds snow, sleet and rain; while the under coat keeps them warm. They moult (heavily shed) twice a year, causing huge amounts of soft, down-like fur to be deposited indoors. They need regular, everyday brushing to keep them cool in summer and prevent skin problems.

The Elkhound stands between 18" - 21" tall. The Coarse, silver and black coat hides up to 70 pounds of squarely built dog; while the pointed, erect ears and dark brown eyes hint of the intelligence within.

We are pleased to welcome Loki to our practice!
