American Bulldog

Trooper is a Bulldog!

During the mid 1800's, the Bulldog was extremely popular in England and the breeding standards weren't as rigid as they later became. Therefore, many of the Bulldogs of the working class were smaller - at around 25 pounds, and had perky ears. The ears, in particular, were an unpopular trait in England. These smaller dogs were taken to France by lace workers and traveling dog dealers - where they became very popular with the French women - who particularly liked the perky "bat" ears. The French breeders worked to improve on consistently producing them in the puppies. The "Frenchie" came to America around the turn of the century.

This little Bulldog loves to clown and play. It loves to cuddle with its family and snooze on a lap. Known for its sweet, companionable disposition, it has minimal exercise requirements that can be met with short leash walks. It has no tolerance for heat and humidity and most can't swim. It should not live outdoors.

This little Bulldog shares many traits with the English Bulldog - but not the shuffling, rolling gait. This little dog is alert and curious - with a fluid, unrestrained movement. The English Bulldog may pack as much as 50 pounds onto its 15" frame, but this little Bulldog is absolutely "svelte" at 28 pounds on a 13" frame.

We are pleased to welcome Trooper to our practice!
