Welsh Terrier

Libby is a Welsh Terrier!

There were originally 2 versions of the Welsh Terrier - the Ynysfor that was running with the Otterhounds in North Wales and the Old English Broken Haired Terrier from England. They both probably had Black and Tan Rough Terrier in their backgrounds. When they began to be shown in the breed ring, they both became known as the Welsh Terrier. Both breeds were used to hunt fox and ran with the Otter Hounds.

These original dogs were too rough for the show ring; so, the breeders attempted to improve the coat by crossing them with the wire Fox Terrier and by carefully selecting for the preferred coat. The result was a dog that looks a lot like a miniature Airedale.

The Welsh Terrier is playful and mischievous, more mild mannered than most terriers, independent, curious and sensitive toward strangers. It may be scrappy toward other dogs and pets. It needs plenty of exercise to discourage digging and barking.

This is a confident, alert hunting dog with a free, effortless gait. It is capable of running at a good speed and needs to be kept in a fenced area or on leash, as it tends to wander off to go hunting. It can be kept outdoors in mild weather, but does best with access to its family and home. Letting these animals sleep indoors also will help with the maintenance of the coat, which will need to be brushed or combed 2 - 3 times a week and taken to a groomer for shaping every 3 months. The ears may need training to ensure the adult shape.

The Welsh Terrier is a compact, sturdy dog that will weigh about 20 pounds and stand around 15" tall.

We are pleased to welcome Libby to our practice!
