Rottweilers probably originated with the Romans as guard and herding dogs for their cattle. While on a trip north, some of them settled in a town in southern Germany called Rottweil. Rottweil was a prosperous "cattle town" and the dogs were used by butchers to drive cattle and guard the money that they earned. Eventually cattle drives were outlawed in the town and railroads were built to handle the herds.
With no need for such a large dog to handle the cattle, their numbers declined to near extinction. They would have been lost but for the efforts of breed fanciers during the early 20th century.
This is a large, confident dog. It’s bold, alert and can be rather stubborn and headstrong. It can be overly protective of its family and reserved with strangers. There is a lifelong need for socialization, constant training and vigorous exercise. This is definitely a dog that needs obedience training and a lot of quality time with its human family.
The short, black and brown coat needs minimal care on this 80 to 135 pound animal. It’s important not to let this animal become overweight!
We are pleased to welcome Onna and Draven to our practice!
