Longhaired Dachshund

Fritz is a Longhaired Dachshund!

Evidence of the existence of these little dogs doesn't exist until the 16th century, when "a low crooked legged" dog was mentioned for hunting badgers. Dachshund means badger in Germany, where this little breed originated. They love to hunt and dig, are independent and good with the children in its’ own family.

The low-slung, long body will let it travel underground, into rodent tunnels; while the jaw and head have the necessary strength to face the prey. The Dachshund is courageous & confident and demonstrates a keen nose and loud voice when hunting underground.

These curious little dogs are bold and ready for adventure! They can have smooth, long or a “rough” coat, but the originals were smooth. Their colors range from the well known red through brindle. It’s small size makes it ideal for apartment life, but it loves a chance to take walks outside.

The smooth-coated variety has a short, shining coat; the long-haired is sleek and sometimes wavy; and the wire-haired should have tight, thick, hard hair with a fine undercoat. The standard Dachshund will typically stand under 9” tall and weigh up to 32 pounds. The Miniature weighs less than 11 pounds and is under 6” tall.

We are pleased to welcome Fritz to our practice!
